Hammonds
Plains/ Tantallon, Nova Scotia, Recreation and Leisure
There
are few recreation facilities located in the Hammonds Plains/Tantallon
but there are still many recreational opportunities in and close to the
community.
The area does have an excellent olympic size indoor rink, outdoor pool,
gymnasium and fitness center located in Tantallon called the St.
Margaret's Center. This facility is located in front of the Westwood
Hills Subdivision and next to the Hubley
Center Shopping Center.
Many of the recreation activities take place in Halifax, Clayton Park,
Sackville or Bedford. Most activities are only a few minutes drive away.
For example Clayton Park has some of the best recreation facilities found
anywhere. There is an indoor pool and indoor tennis courts at the Northcliff
Center, and many facilities at the Mainland Common. The Mainland Common
is slated to be the major recreation center in HRM. As of 2008 Main Land
Common currently has 2 outdoor playing fields with artificial turf, an
indoor soccer field, a baseball field and more. Construction began in
December 2008 on metros newest
recreation facility called the Mainland Common Center. This $40 million
facility will a have an 8 lane 25 meter indoor swimming pool, 3 special
use pools, 52,000 sq ft field house , a 6 lane indoor track , 11,000 sq
ft fitness and wellness center and more. This facility will be used in
the 2011 Canada Games
For indoor swimming many Hammonds Plains/Tantallon residents go to the
Northcliff Center in Clayton Park, Sackville Sports Stadium in Sackville,
Dalplex at Dalhousie University or the Spryfield Wave Pool. All are 15-20
minutes drive away. In the summer many residents swim in the many lakes
in the area or sue the outdoor pools at St. Margaret's Center or the Lion's
Pool in Bedford.
For hockey residents will use the rink in St. Margaret's Center, Lebrun
Center in Bedford, one of the two rinks in Sackville or many of the other
rinks throughout metro. Like anyone involved in hockey in metro your games
and practices will vary throughout metro and could be anywhere from within
your community to an hours drive away. There is a local hockey associations
servicing the area TASA Ducks Minor Hockey
Association and Bedford District
Minor Hockey Association. For Ringette the Bedford
Ringette Association is a good choice. There are also two basketball
associations servicing the community, St
Margarets Bay Minor Basketball Association and Bedford
Minor Basketball. There are several other associations and sporting
opportunities in the area. Check with the HRM Recreation Department for
more information.
Outdoor water sports are enjoyed in the many lakes in the community. The
salt water beaches of the south shore such Queensland and Hubbards are
a 10-15 minute drive away. The area is very well located to take advantage
of this feature and many of the residents do just that.
The Hammond's Plains/ Tantallon area is located only 10 minutes from Bayer's
Lake Shopping area where you will find big box stores such as Costco,
Winner's, Staples, Old Navy, HomeSense, Home Depot and many many more.
There are also many restaurants in Bayer's lake including east Side Marios,
Montana, Jack Aster's and others. In Bayer's lake you will also find metro's
largest movie theater complex called Empire 18 which has 18 movie theaters
including an IMAX theater.
The Hammonds Plains/ Tantallon area has lots of recreation opportunities
for all ages and interest. If not in the community itself they are found
a short drive away.
