Tips
Before You Move
1. Send your forwarding address to the local post office and send change
of address card to:
Insurance Companies.
Magazines.
Merchants with whom you have accounts.
Clubs to which you belong.
Friends.
Charge accounts, credit cards.
Book/CD clubs.
Catalogs.
Veterans Administration.
2. Transfer your insurance:
Life.
Hospitalization.
Automobile.
Household goods & personal possessions
in order that they will be properly covered
enroute, as well as your new home.
Have your bank recommend an affiliate in your
new city.
Arrange sufficient cash or travelers checks
to cover the cost of moving services and
expenses. Cash or a certified check is
usually required by the transfer company.
3. Transfer Bank Accounts:
Checking.
Savings.
Safe Deposit Box.
4. Disconnect and obtain any deposits or letters of credit.
Electricity.
Gas.
Telephone.
Water.
Cable television.
5. Stop service on the following:
Newspaper.
Lawn.
Garbage Collection.
Laundry, Diapers.
Bakery, Milk.
Other _________________________.
6. Notify the principal of your children's school about your intended
move.
Request a letter from the principal covering
the status of your children in school.
7. Notify your place of worship that you are leaving.
8. Obtain the religious records of your children.
9. Obtain all medical and immunization records of shots, dental records
and eyeglass
prescriptions.
Have your drug prescriptions filled.
10. Check with your attorney about will revisions, if moving out of
state.
11. Have appliances serviced for the trip:
Service power mowers, boats, etc. Drain
all gas/oil to prevent fire in moving van.
Automobiles.
Refrigerator.
12. Pick up personal items:
Shoes being repaired.
Dry cleaning and laundry.
Off-season stored clothing.
Film.
Moving Day
1. Make arrangements for care of children and pets.
2. Plan to stay at the house; you might have to make some last minute
decisions. Wait until the
movers are gone before you leave.
3. Make a final check of the house for lost belongings.
4. Double check that the movers have your new address and the scheduled
delivery date.
Check to make sure they have your phone number in case of an emergency.
At Your New Address
1. Check all heating and cooling devices, including your television,
washer, dryer and
refrigerator.
2. Ask the post officeabout mail which they might be holding for you.
3. Register your family at a new place of worship and your children
at a new school.
4. Order services for:
Electricity.
Gas.
Telephone.
Cable TV.
Diaper service.
Installation of appliances.
Water.
Fuel Oil.
Newspapers.
Garbage Collections.
5. Get new licenses for:
Automobiles.
Drivers.
Trailers.
Recreational vehicles.
Pets.
Boats.
