Child Care in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM)

HRM offers a wide variety of excellent child care options available to parents.

Child care centers are licensed in Nova Scotia. The Province of Nova Scotia oversee the licensing process and formal inspections are carried out on all licensed centers every year. Any violation of a regulation is posted online for parents to see. There are licensed child facilities throughout HRM that range in size from small centers with 14 or less children to large child care facilities with over 100 children.

The child care options available in licensed centers vary. Programs vary from full day daycare to part time educational based programs that are called Preschool or Nursery School. Some centers will offer only one program while others will offer both full day and part time programs. With Preschool or Nursery School children attend the center for classes either two or three half days per week. Parents are responsible for pick up and drop off. There is no lunch provided. These programs are provided for children from 2 1/2 - 5 years of age. Preparing children for school is the goal of these types of programs which are very popular throughout all of HRM. Full day programs generally offer childcare from 7 am to 6 pm.

Many people also take care of children in their home. Parents who don`t want their children in a large child care facility often choose this type of care because typically there would only be a few children in the home being cared for at a time. Parents of infants will often go this route because finding infant care can be very difficult in HRM because only a few centers offer infant care and the number of spaces available is limited.

For children who are school age before school and after school care is offered by many child care centers throughout HRM. Child care centers that offer this service will often drive the child from the child care center to school in the morning and pick them up at the school at the end of the day and bring the child back to the center or walk the children to the local school bus and have staff meet the school bus at the end of the school day. There is also in a program called ``Excel`` that is offered in many public schools. With this program you would drop your child off at a school before school and they will stay at that school for the day. The Excel programs are popular because the children are dropped off in one location at stay at the school all day. The Excel program is administered through the Halifax Regional School Board.
