Bedford Recreation
and Leisure
There
are many varied leisure activites in the Bedford area. Bedford's recreation
is implemented two ways. The HRM Recreation Department implements programs
and activities. There are also many separate organizations that work
in cooperation with the recreation department but have their own coaches,
volunteers and executive. These organizations have their own contact
people and have their own registrations. To find a contact person a

of the sports organizations in Bedford.
Bedford has all types of sports available to it's residents. From basketball
to lawn bowling there is something for everyone.
Range Park Above- Baseball, soccer
and track
Ice Sports
Bedford has few indoor sports facilites but it does have it's own rink
at the Lebrun Center. This rink is located in the middle of the community.
Hockey, Ringette, Figure Skating and public skates are very popular
in the area. The Bedford Minor Hockey Assocaition and Bedford Ringette
Association run quality programs and have large memberships.
Sailing
Bedford is definitely a sailing community. It's location on the shores
of the Bedford Basin is ideal for the sport. The community has it's
own yacht club and marina. The Bedford
Yacht Club offers sailing lessons in the summer for all levels.
Swimming
Bedford has two outdoor swiming pools at the Lions
Park. These heated pools are open from late June to Late August
and are open to the public. Swimming lessons are offered here during
the summer months.The location is spectacular with both pools overlooking
the Bedford Basin. Bedford has a competitive summer swim team called
the Bedford Beavers Swim Team.
This team has hosted several Provincial swim meets and many of it's
members have won numerous competitons. There is also swimming at Paper
Mill Lake where lessons are taught in the summer months.
Bedford does not have it's own indoor pool but
Bedford residents use the pool at the Sackville
Sports Stadium in Lower Sackville about 5 kilometers from Bedford
and other pools located in metro such as Dalplex
and Dartmouth Sportplex
.
Lawn
Bowling
Bedford has it's own lawn bowling facility. This has become a very popular
sport in the community particularly with the seniors. Lawn bowling is
available from late spring through the summer months. A yearly registration
fee is payable to become a member of this club. Phone Bedford Recreation

Golf
T here are no golf courses in Bedford but there are many a shor t drive
away. There are good golf courses in Halifax ( Ashburn), Dartmouth(
Brightwood and Grandview), Beaverbank(Lost Creek) and Hammonds Plains
( Glen Arbour) and many more located 30-60 minutes away.

Gymnastics
Gymnastic instruction is not available in Bedford
itself but is offered a few miles away in Lower Sackville. Taiso
Gymnastic Club offers an excellent program for children of all ages.

Skiing
There are no ski hills in Bedford but there are
two hills not far away. Martock ski hill is located in Windsor, Nova
Scotia which is only a 30 minute drive away.
Wentworth ski hill is located in the Wentworth Valley in Nova Scotia.
It is located a little farther away about 70 minutes away but it is
a larger hill with more runs.
Dancing
Dancing is popular in the Bedford
area. There are dance classes offered primarily by a private dance academy
located in Sunnyside Mall in Bedford but some dance is offered by the

Music Lessons
All types of music lessons are available in the Bedford area. The Canadian
Conservatory of Music is located in Bedford and offers lessons in most
instruments. This company is owned and operated as part of Musicstop
which is HRM's largest supplier of musical instruments. You can phone

Many individuals also offer lessons in their home with such groups as
Music For Young Children.
