Halifax School System
The Halifax metro area school system has many differences
depending on what area you decide to purchase in. There are many similarities
also. There is no kindergarten. Children begin school at 5 years old in
grade primary. They remain in school until they
have completed grade 12. There is french immersion from grade 7 to grade
12 in most areas. French immersion before grade 7 can be found in a few
schools but only a few. If french immersion is important then check with
a real estate agent to find out what school is nearest to the area you
are interested in living. There is one completely french school located
in Dartmouth and second in Bedford where french is the primary language
taught .
Computers are found in most schools but there use is somewhat limited.
No formal computer training is seen until grade 7 and even then it is
somewhat limited. Most parents who are interested in their children learning
computers will enroll their child in private computer schools.
Overcrowding is found in several schools. Class sizes of 30-40 children
is becoming common. Again if your child needs special help this may be
a factor in what area you choose.
One important factor about our school system is the date of eligibility
for grade primary. A child must turn 5 years old no later than October
1st of the school year in order to attend grade primary. In many parts
of Canada this date is December 31st.
The entire Halifax metro area public school system is administered by
one school board the Halifax Regional
School Board. Their site contains more information about the education
system in the Halifax area.
