Shopping in Halifax Regional Municipality
The best way to describe shopping in the Halifax area is diverse. You can find everything from the box stores at Bayer's Lake or Dartmouth Crossing to large sprawling shopping malls such as Mic Mac Mall or Halifax Shopping Center to the quaint shops of Historic properties. If you need something you will find it no problem. Stores are open 7 days a week. However not all stores are open on Sunday and many have limited hours on Sunday usually 12 noon to 5 pm. Below is a selection of some of the shopping available in the Halifax metro area.
Dartmouth Crossing:
Dartmouth Crossing is HRM's newest and most unique shopping areas. Dartmouth Crossing has big box stores such as Staples, Walmart, Home Depot,Costco(2008) and many more but also has a very unique main street style of shopping that has stores on both sides of the street so you can get out of your car and shop much like you would in a downtown shopping district. For information visit the Dartmouth Crossing website DARTMOUTH CROSSING.
Bayer's Lake Industrial Park:
Possibly the most popular shopping district in the Halifax Regional Municipality is Bayer's Lake. This shopping area is located just outside Halifax towards Bedford off the #102 Hwy. The big box stores such as Costco, Winner's, Staples, Futureshop, Home Depot, Old Navy, Wal-Mart, Winner's Homesense, Linen's and Things, Brick and many others are found here. This is one of the fastest growing shopping areas in all of Nova Scotia with new stores opening monthly. For more photos of Bayer's Lake click here BAYERS LAKE
Larger Shopping Malls:
There are several large shopping malls in HRM. The largest is Mic Mac Mall (photo left)which is located in Dartmouth. This mall has over 160 stores including Bay, Disney Store, Eddie Bauer, Zellers,Toys R Us, Futureshop, Winners, Homesense, Old Navy, Gap and more. Dartmouth also has a second large mall which is called Penhorn Mall.
On the Halifax side Halifax Shopping Center is the largest shopping mall. Here you find Sears and Sears Outlet Store. The largest Walmart and Sobeys in Atlantic Canada. Popular small box retailers such as Winners, Pier I Imports and Coast Mountain. Across the street is West End Mall and a couple of blocks away is The Village at Bayer's Road.
Park Lane is located in the Spring Garden Road area in downtown Halifax. This is also a good size mall. There are many smaller malls throughout the metro area as well offering a variety of products. In Bedford there are two malls Sunnyside Mall and Bedford Place Mall.
Spring Garden Road:
The Spring Garden Road area is one of liveliest places you could find to shop in the city. This area has about 6 small to medium size shopping malls, including Park Lane, City Centre Atlantic and Spring Garden Place as well as small boutiques spread out along the street. In this area you will find higher end shops of various kinds including designer men's and women's clothing stores. This area is a fun area just to walk and enjoy the sights of the city.
Historic Properties:
This 3 city block area has a Heritage Canada designation and is the oldest surviving group of waterfront warehouses in Canada. The Historic Properties are a cluster of buildings that once housed the portside coopers, rope-makers and warehouses that supplied the ships that began sailing into Halifax Harbour 250 years ago.
This has all been turned into a dynamic marketplace with boutiques, excellent restaurants, pubs and night spots. Here you can stroll along the boardwalk and absorb the atmosphere of the harbour and this great neighborhood.
Barrington Place
:Barrington Place is located in downtown Halifax , close to Historic Properties. This shopping mall is a collection of smaller, specialized stores and shops. This is also a great place just to walk and enjoy the site

Fisherman's Cove, Eastern Passage:
Located in eastern Passage, which is just outside of Dartmouth, this working fishing village offers not only quaint oceanside shopping, but a boardwalk, tours to McNab's and Lawlor's islands, and deep-sea fishing. The shops offer local marine crafts, aboriginal jewelry, gifts, clothing and photo supplies. The Cove also has a seafood restaurant.
