Timberlea/Beechville/Lakeside,
Nova Scotia, Recreation and Leisure
There
are few recreation facilities located in the Beechville/Lakeside/Timberlea
(BLT) area but there are fantastic facilities closeby. The area does has
a fabulous walking trail along an abandoned railway line called BLT
Rail to Trails. This 9 km trail system is a very popular area for
walkers, runs and owners of recreation vehicles.
Many of the recreation activities take place in Clayton Park, which is
only a few minute drive away. The Clayton Park has some of the best recreation
facilities found anywhere. There is an indoor pool and indoor tennis courts
at the Northcliff Center, and many facilities at the Mainland Common.
The Mainland Common is slated to be the major recreation center in HRM.
As of 2008 Main Land Common currently has 2 outdoor playing fields with
artificial turf, an indoor soccer field, a baseball field and more. Construction
began in December 2008 on metros newest recreation facility called the
Mainland Common Center. This $40 million facility will a have an 8 lane
25 meter indoor swimming pool, 3 special use pools, 52,000 sq ft field
house , a 6 lane indoor track , 11,000 sq ft fitness and wellness center
and more. This facility will be used in the 2011 Canada Games .
The BLT area is also located very close to Bayer's
Lake Shopping area where you will find big box stores such as Costco,
Winner's, Staples, Old Navy, HomeSense, Home Depot and many many more.
There are also many restaurants in Bayer's lake including east Side Marios,
Montana, Jack Aster's and others. In Bayer's lake you will also find metro's
largest movie theater complex called Empire 18 which has 18 movie theaters
including an IMAX theater.
The salt water beaches of the south shore such Queensland and Hubbards
are a 10-15 minute drive away. The area is very well located to take advantage
of this feature and many of the residents do just that.
There are plenty of outdoor sports fields in the BLT area so sports such
as soccer, football, baseball etc are very popular . Many of the organized
sports are operated by private associations run by volunteers but the
HRM recreation Department also offers programs year round in the area.
The Beechville/Lakeside/Timberlea area has lots of recreation opportunities
for all ages and interest. If not in the community itself they are found
a short drive away.
